Have you ever thought you might want to learn to sew? Well, I’ve been doing it for a long time, and I absolutely love the craft.

As a child, I taught myself to sew clothes for my dolls, but now I use it to make garments that fit the way I like. Plus, it’s my way to express myself through creativity.

And I’ll give you more reasons to start, as I’ve discovered the many benefits. This may help push the needle (literally) to get you stitching!

Why Learn to Sew

Although sewing used to be popular before I grew up, the hobby has faded a bit. But, I’m starting to see it make a comeback as people are looking for ways to work with their hands!

1. Crafty Peace of Mind

Having a hobby that allows you to be creative can help with stress. I can spend hours getting lost on the sewing machine or cutting table.

I find sewing very therapeutic when I am not sewing on a deadline.

If you are like me, you can sew and listen to audiobooks, music, or even videos in the background. Even while eating cookies and leaving crumbs all over the place!

I always have a sewing project waiting in the wings.

When something bothers me, my mood lifts when I start sewing. And after a while, I forget all about my dreaded problems!

2. Wear Your Creations

When you sew, your creative side shines as you wear your handmade clothes. You will not see yourself coming and going

No one else will wear your exact outfits—unless you have a copycat!

People may even ask you questions about your handmade wardrobe.

While browsing in Nordstrom one day, an employee asked me if I bought my jacket from the luxury designer section. I said, “Actually, I made this jacket.”

The lady almost flipped over and called her co-workers over. They complimented my work, and I couldn’t help but feel so proud of myself.

Yes! It is okay to be proud and happy about the things you sew or create!

3. Make Your Clothes Fit

Buying an outfit in the store may not fit as well as you would like. When you sew your clothes, you can make them fit your body

You will learn the types of clothing that fit well and the patterns you enjoy creating.

Why not alter your own clothes?

With sewing skills, you can shorten your dress or turn your pants into shorts. That jacket with the oversized sleeves can be made to fit.

Mix and match colors, patterns, designs, textures, and fabric types. Your imagination is the only limit.

Make your own sewing patterns or drape fabric on your dress form. You can also learn many sewing hacks and tips.

Those are great skills that come in handy.

4. Develop New Skills

When you begin sewing, you’ll learn new skills. Whether it’s threading a needle or the serger, you’re tuning fine motor skills.

From making a simple pillow to bench cushions, you will learn.

I learned so much by putting in zippers, sewing buttons, hemming pants, cutting fabrics, and working with different fabrics.

I’ve been sewing for many years, but I still have a lot to learn. Each project brings new challenges as I find better ways to finish the job.

And I always look forward to experimenting with different types of fabrics.

Cutting out pattern pieces and sewing them together with straight or curved lines takes a lot of skill. Let’s not forget other sewing skills, such as drawing, tracing, and pressing.

5. Repair Your Clothes

I know people who throw away good clothing. Yes—some people do this.

You might need to sew a button or stitch a loose seam. Do you want a longer hem or to add a creative twist to a garment?

With basic skills, you can fix old clothes in your closet and continue wearing them. They don’t have to end up in the junk pile because they need a little mending.

Don’t you hate finding a hole in a nice piece of clothing? When you learn how to sew, you can fix it up like brand new.

6. Upcycle Clothes

On the same note as fixing clothes, you can also upcycle clothes. This is something I love to do.

When you have an outfit that doesn’t fit you anymore—I mean, fit your tastes or is way too oversized, you can make it into something else.

Have you thought about taking pants and making them into a skirt or bag? Would you like to make a patchwork shirt?

The options are endless, and I do this all the time. It’s fun to experiment and see what I can come up with.

7. Connect with Others

When you sew, you can join a community of creators. I’ve been able to connect with others because we share the same hobby.

Hey, new friend

Once, a quilting group in a nearby city asked volunteers to cut and sew pieces. I hesitated to join because I knew little about quilting, but it was for a great cause.

No worries! They taught me some things as we worked together to make quilts for military veterans.

I met so many people who loved to sew. All evening, we talked about our sewing machines, fabric, thread, notions, and cookies. Ha!

Yummm… cookies…

You wouldn’t believe how many people brought homemade treats! Besides cookies, we shared many tips and tricks.

Everyone had stories to share. It was so much fun!

8. Job Opportunities

You’ll never know where sewing will take you. The skills you learn could lead to a job or DIY career.

When I started out making doll clothes, I didn’t think too much about it. I learned to sew for myself.

I just wanted to have fun and see what I could create from the scraps my mom left out. Who would have known what path sewing would take me down?

As I sewed, I wanted to learn more. So, I taught myself more. I loved the challenge.

I never thought I would get a sewing job one day, but I landed one. Your new skills could lead to many opportunities and even a career.

Additional Notes

You may start sewing for one reason, but then your reason may change later on. I’ve known people who started it as a hobby, and then it became a job.

So, you can learn to upcycle your clothes or repair them. But in time, you may become very good at this, and it could lead to more opportunities.

If you’re on the fence about it, why not just try it to see if it’s for you? Take an intro sewing class or try an online video.

Final Thoughts

I’m glad I started sewing as a child, as this was one of the best hobbies I learned. Not only did it land me a job, I’ve been able get creative through fashion.

This is something you can begin or continue to do at all ages. And I hope to be really old and still pushing on the sewing machine!
