Cooler Weather Fashion Sewing Ideas
By the way, I live in an area where it doesn’t snow and drop below freezing. In that case, you can alter the garments with long sleeves and maxi-length hems.
Choose heavier-weight fabrics, and think about sizing for layering.
Dark Floral Print Dress

You don’t have to stop wearing florals when summer ends. Choose dark colors, as they look so pretty in the fall and winter too.
I made this dress in polyester with the Protea capsule wardrobe pattern.
It’s seldom that I sew with this kind of fabric due to my allergies. But it’s a heavier weight, and pretty soft inside.
Pair this dress with stockings and boots for the cooler weather. And throw on a long cardigan if it’s chilly outside.
Button-Up Dress

A button-up dress is so versatile in that it can be dressed up or down. I made mine using McCall’s M7920, and it’d look great in a variety of colors.
But, I love it in a solid color for fall, and it doesn’t have to be your typical nature hues. Dark blue and black can go with every season.
I made this dress just above the knee length, but you can make it in maxi length for the cooler weather. Wear it with tall boots and a cardigan coat.
Overdyed Knit Dress

A lot of people associate tie-dye with bright summer colors, but you can tone it down. If you have white fabric in your stash, you can overdye it or create your own design like I did.
I made this easy, pull-on knit dress with soft, embroidered fabric using Simplicity S2883. It’s out of print, but there are many similar dress patterns out there.
You can make your version long-sleeved in maxi length too. I’d prefer to wear mine with sneakers, but you can pair it with boots or dress shoes.
Cargo Maxi Skirt

I made my cargo maxi skirt using Simplicity S9146 sewing pattern. I also upcycled some linen pants that were a bit too big.
Well, I love this skirt for all seasons, but for fall especially. I think this skirt would look great in any solid color, and even with pin stripes like the one I made.
You could pair it with long socks underneath. I’m okay with wearing it with sneakers, but boots would look cool too.
Gathered Midi Skirt

Oh, a gathered skirt is such a classic, and I made mine using Simplicity S1369 sewing pattern. Now, I used a lighter-weight fabric, with mine, but also lined it.
Making it in long length and wearing stockings can keep you warm. I also paired mine with a long-sleeved knit top.
Throw on a long jacket with a hood to complete the look. And some booties would look cute too.
High Waist Knit Skirt

This high-waist knit skirt is so comfy and easy to make. It’s Simplicity S8474 sewing pattern with design options.
Mine is the base skirt, but the pickup skirt would also be cute for fall. Pair this with a knit top or basic T-shirt, and it makes such a comfy combo.
It’s really warm and cozy, and I prefer wearing this over sweatpants. Pair this with sneakers or even boots, and you’re all set.
Knit Maxi Skirt with Slit

Now the previous piece was comfy, and this knit maxi skirt is luxurious! I love the long front slit on New Look N6709 sewing pattern.
I made it with a soft fabric that just flows when I walk, and the slit gives it that breezy feel. This would look nice in dark floral material too.
The pattern has a pants variation if that’s more your style. Pair this with booties or sneakers and a knit top like mine for a casual look.
Long Tiered Skirt

I just can’t resist making a long tiered skirt in a pretty color. Honestly, I think this blue linen could go with just about every season.
It’s made with the Megan Neilson Protea pattern, and I have the idea to make this into a pretty patchwork skirt soon. But this skirt is so fun for fall because I can envision it in autumn florals.
I wear mine with a cut-out top, but a classic T would look cute too. Pair it with sneakers or booties and you’re good to go.
Paper Bag Pants

I’m all about wearing skirts, but sometimes a girl needs some pants too. I love these cute paper bag pants that I made using the Megan Neilson Opal sewing pattern.
They are very easy to make, and mine are the tapered ones. But you can make wide-legged ones too, and even shorts—yes, people wear those in the fall too.
I made my pants in a dark blue chambray fabric, which is a nice neutral color. For a more dressy look, you could go for a silky fabric too.
Wide-Legged Slit Pants

If you’re more in the mood for some wide-legged slit pants, I made some using Burda 6199 sewing pattern. Just like the paper bag pants, they’re made in dark chambray.
When I walk in these, they flow with the long slits. They’re perfect for pleasant weather, as they give you a nice cool breeze.
So, they make a great transition piece when the days are still warm. Pair these with some wedges for a fun look.
V-Neck Knit Top

I’m all about wearing a cozy, casual top when it starts cooling down. I like the flattering V-neck on Simplicity S8950 sewing pattern.
I’ve made this top in so many different colors, and you could do contrast arm patches. Or make the base pattern for a more classic look.
Use this as your top or to layer on top of a T-shirt. This would look cute paired with a maxi or mini skirt too.
Tracksuit Jacket

You’ll want to pick up this classic tracksuit jacket. Oh, I just love this New Look N6142 sewing pattern, and I’ve been using it for years.
It’s still in print, it’s just that great! But I’ve made every variation of this pattern, in practically every size.
You can make a whole tracksuit with this pattern. I even made mine by upcycling a white mattress cover. The winter white looks nice, and it reminds me of snowy afternoons.
Cardigan

Now, what would fall be without a classic cardigan? There are so many patterns on the market, and you can’t go wrong with a basic one.
I’ve been using McCall’s M5713 for years, but they have similar ones out. What I like about it is the long, thick band that looks like a scarf.
I even made mine with a hoodie for fun. This can be made with different types of knit fabric, and I chose a neutral gray that would go with everything in my wardrobe.
Upcycled Jean Jacket

Well, if you have a lot of denim sitting around the house, why not make a jean jacket? I upcycled pants to make mine using Simplicity S8845 sewing pattern.
There are so many jacket patterns out there, and this one is more structured. You could make one without all the details.
The garment is a classic that you can use for fall and other seasons too. It’s great for layering and or to use as your statement piece.
Zip-Up Long Jacket

Besides making a denim jacket, you could also make it in a longer length. It’s not terribly cold where I live, so it works for me.
I used Simplicity S3694 to make mine, which is out of print, but they have similar ones out there. You might just take one of your jacket patterns and lengthen it.
This is my windbreaker on gusty days, plus with the hood, it keeps the ears warm. Throw this over any garment, and you’re ready to go.
Cardigan Coat

I saved the best for last because if I could only choose one garment to make, it’d be this brown coatigan. The color is so rich, I can’t get enough of it for fall.
I made it with Simplicity S8742 in woven fabric. Yes, you can use a stable knit or even a woven that acts like knit material.
This is such a classic, and it goes with wide-legged or tapered pants, and maxi skirts. I can layer this coat with so many clothes in my wardrobe and it’s one of the most functional and flattering pieces.
Double-Sided Scarf

A nice scarf pairs well with many outfits. Mine is double-sided, so I can change up the look.
I show you how to make it, and it’s a simple and easy one. Plus, this makes a great handmade gift.
Mine is made in knit fabric, but fleece will work too. This is also a great way to use up some remnants in your stash!
Additional Notes
For timeless fall pieces, focus on basics and stay away from trends. They’ll come and go, and change all the time.
If you’re like me, you want to make garments that you can wear for years to come.
I like to make a lot of garments in more neutral colors that can be worn year-round. Try lighter-weight fabric and brighter colors for spring and summer.
Pants can be worn with sandals in the warmer months, and boots and sneakers in the fall. Same with maxi skirts.
Also, a favorite jacket or cardigan can be layered no matter which season it is. Trust me, I do it all the time!
Final Thoughts
Sewing some wardrobe pieces for fall and winter can be fun. I look forward to the new colors, and it’s my favorite time of year.
It’s also the perfect time to dust off the sewing machine. I hope I gave you enough ideas to get stitching!
