Every time I go into a Walmart, I have to check out the sewing and crafting department. It’s my thing, and maybe I’m still mourning the loss of Joann.
I like to browse around even if I don’t need anything in particular. I’m just taking mental notes for the sake of it.
I’m going to tell you what I found in case you’re wondering or looking for options. Hopefully, the one by you has some stock!
Sewing Stuff at Walmart
Well, I know I referred to it as the sewing department, but the sign legitly calls it the craft department.
Most of the pictures are from a big Walmart we visited in Arizona. The ones by me don’t look like this!
It’s not Joann.

As I’ve mentioned, Joann Fabrics is not around anymore. For all you readers from other countries, this was a major fabric and craft store in the US that closed last year.
Anyway, when they were in business, I’d walk around for like 2 hours. You’d find me browsing all the fabric, sewing patterns, and sewing and crafting supplies.
Well, Walmart doesn’t have nearly all the stuff Joann used to carry. But I was actually surprised at the amount of sewing stuff this particular store had in Arizona.
The stores may vary.

Yes, just like any other big chain retailer, they will vary in what they carry. I remember the one by me growing up had a good amount of fabric and a cutting table.
They also had a good amount of supplies. And it was in a very small city. But the one by me now has less, but then again, there’s a Hobby Lobby close by.
When I posted about this on social media, people were quick to comment that their Walmart had no such sewing supplies.
I thought all of them would at least have a few items, but I guess that’s not the case.
They carry sewing patterns.

This Walmart had sewing patterns for over $5 each, okay, more like $6. Anyway, it’s a decent price considering the retail price is $20 to $30!
Yeah, gone are the days of 99-cent sales at Joann. Raise your hand if you remember those times!
Through the years, I saw those sale prices go up to $1.99. Now, at Simplicity.com, they have sales for $3.99, but are usually at $5.99.
Anyway, the Walmart stock is limited and seems to have certain Simplicity, McCall’s, and Kwik Sew patterns. You might not find all the new releases you see at Simplicity.com.
Note that I used to buy New Look patterns at Walmart, but haven’t seen them in a store for a long time.
They carry cute fabric.

I found what looked like a whole aisle of quilting cotton at Walmart. There were a lot of fat quarters and pre-cut bundles.
On a few occasions, I’ve bought some quilting cotton off the bolt from Walmart. It was reasonably priced, and the quality was pretty good.
I made a dress and some summer shorts. Plus, the prints were very cute.

Recently, we bought some fabric from Walmart to make some makeshift curtains for our camper van. We were in California, and it was during a road trip.
They had a discount bin, and the fabric was pretty cheap. Plus, it was in great condition and worked for what we needed it for.
I haven’t seen much apparel fabric, but they have outdoor and crafting fabric. I checked online, and they have more pre-cut stuff.
They have basic sewing supplies.

If you’re beginning, you could actually get everything to start from Walmart. They have the basics, and it’s good enough.

I saw measuring tools, cutting tools, needles, pins, thread, and more. I’ve bought different types of elastics from there, including knit, woven, and braided.
They carry brand-name stuff like Dritz, and off-brand items too. I’ve found that they’re both decent.

Plus, you can find a sewing machine for around $100 at Walmart. I saw these Brother ones in the store in Oahu, Hawaii.
A relative of mine actually bought one and said it worked pretty well.
They carry other supplies too.

Remember that Walmart has other sewing supplies that might not be in the craft department. For example, they have irons and ironing boards.
I’ve bought washable Crayola markers for marking fabric and starch for stiffening materials. These things are in other departments.
I also buy laundry detergent, softener, baking soda, Ritz dye, vinegar, and salt. These are things I use for dyeing fabric and washing.
You might also find crafting books, ribbons, clear plastic bags, tape, baskets, and organizational supplies. All the stuff I use!
Let’s not forget the snacks you can find there! Because I eat and sew, but that’ll have to be another post. Ha!
Additional Notes

You might call ahead before driving to a certain Walmart to see what they carry. As of now, gas costs a lot of money, so I’m not driving far away for nothing.
You can also go online and search items on Walmart.com. I filter by In-store, and you can change the store location by entering your zip code.
Otherwise, you’ll find all the things sold on their website. Not all things are sold by Walmart, as some are sold by third parties.
Final Thoughts
Well, that wraps up what I found in the sewing department at Walmart. I’ll keep browsing them whenever I visit one.
Maybe I’ll have to do a case study or something. Do you like looking at sewing and crafting stuff too?
