Well, there’s this trend going around on social media about posting an AI picture of yourself in the 1980s.
So I thought I’d post a real picture of myself in the 80s wearing the handmade clothes my mother sewed.
This is my real mother, the one who made our clothes. We’re standing in front of the real Ford car we rode in.
Everything is real. Nothing about it has been generated by AI.
As you can see, my sister and I are wearing color-coordinating sets. Bright and beautiful red dresses.
We’re probably on the way to church or going out to eat. I’m not sure where we were coming from, but it was a snapshot of our real life.
So I don’t need to ask AI to generate an image of myself in the 80s, because I have actual photos and memories of that time.
My dad took this picture. He had a real Kodak camera that shot on film.
We’d have to drop off the film and wait a week for it to get developed into pictures. And if you remember those times, you couldn’t wait to see how those pictures came out!
AI cannot generate those fond memories.
While it may seem fun to post all the AI-generated photos on social media, I’m not going to participate.
Why can’t the trend be to post a real memory from the 80s? If it’s not of you, maybe a picture of parent or grandparent?
And for all the people who weren’t yet born and want to see themselves living in the 80s, yeah, I get it. It’s fun to imagine.
I wasn’t around in the roaring 1920s and would’ve loved to see what I’d look like strutting around in New York City at that time.
I could tell AI to generate an image of me posing with a vintage Singer sewing machine in my handmade duds.
Then I could post it on social media. I wonder how many people would believe it. Probably none. They’d just comment “AI.”
Nonetheless, I wasn’t around in the 1920s. I’m not going to ask AI to generate something I didn’t live through just to post.
Don’t persecute me. I’m not against making fun pics and using AI.
But these data centers use up a whole lot of energy for the sake of people AI-ing all day.
I don’t know about you, but I’m tired of seeing AI videos and pics pop up on my social media feed. That’s why I’m spending less and less time on the platforms.
It was so much better when people posted real pictures on social media.
I use AI, but never for writing or images. I use it to bounce ideas off of, but still do tons of my own research.
By the way, I don’t trust AI like that. It can give you false information and plain out lie. So I fact-check everything.
And I believe there are great uses for AI. I recently got a mammogram. They asked if I’d consent to the use of their new AI technology.
After the radiologist examines the X-rays, the AI would be used to detect any anomalies that might not be seen by the human eye.
Sounds good. I fully consented to that.
Look, I’m not telling you not to post your 80s AI pic. Do what you may with your time and energy.
Participate in all the AI challenges on earth. I’d rather see AI being used to advance medicine and technology.
I’d rather we go back to posting real photos, writing real works, and making real music.
Going back to my picture—we’re wearing real handmade garments made by my mom. She was a real sewist, and we are her real kids.
And there’s something nice about knowing that this little slice of my life wasn’t concocted by artificial intelligence.

Omgg look how adorable!! I absolutely love the dresses and those were the best times in the 80’s! Can we please bring back the simplicity of that time??
Thank you my friend! And yes, I agree! The 80s were a great time! 🙂
