I was having dinner with a friend and commented on his beautiful diamond ring. He said it’s very special and that his mom gave it to him.
After he added that he wears it all the time, I asked if he was afraid he’d ruin it somehow.
He replied, “I wear my nice things, even when I stay at home. Because when you die, someone else will be wearing the things you never did.”
I thought about what he said. He’s right.
So this is a reminder to wear your beautiful clothes and jewelry, even if you’re not going anywhere.
That’s why I’m busting them out, even if it’s to play dress up and take some pictures.
I’m putting on the jewels to sit on my couch and read.
And if you’re a sewist like me, you might be saving that garment you’ve poured hours into.
Whether you sew or not, you might be stashing that luxurious outfit for that special day or the right moment.
Well, let that day be today.
You can start small. Choose one little thing to wear each day.
So often we put things aside to wear for special events.
There’s the dress that’s been hanging in the closet, waiting for the perfect beach vacation in the islands.
And I thought about some people I know.
They buy nice things and hide them in drawers. Clothes hang in the closet with tags dangling off them.
My friends tell me about all the new clothes they bought years ago and haven’t worn.
I once had a co-worker who told me that she had bags of clothes packed away in her closet.
At work, she wore the same handmade dresses, albeit beautiful. But she claimed the others were too nice to see the light of day.
They were cast aside for special events that she never went to.
Just in case we think. Saving it for that one day.
I watched a YouTube video about a guy who resells things he finds at estate auctions and thrift stores.
He said, “Lots of dead people have nice things. Things that haven’t been used or worn.”
So let’s wear our nice things. Wear the pretty handmade blouse that’s just sitting in the closet.
Wear the diamonds and pearls, even if you have nowhere to go.
Because if you don’t wear them, someone else eventually will.
