I just finished a skirt that should’ve been done a couple of days ago. When it comes to sewing, I’ve found that indecision can cost me a lot of extra time.
And let’s not forget my sanity. My problem is that I question myself too much. I’m a bit of a perfectionist.
And the best way to kill a project is perfecting the daylights out of it.
It’s okay to make mistakes, and they can actually make a handmade garment look cool when done right.
And there are little mistakes we can live with. Most of the time, no one else is going to notice or care.
But I seem to think too much about them. I over-question and wonder if I can make it just right.
So, this skirt was upcycled from pants. I was excited because I had just enough fabric to make it.
I decided to cut it a size 12 in the beginning. By the time it was finished, I pretty much talked myself into sizing it down to a 10.
And that happens in sewing. You make something, and it comes out too big.
So yes, you should take it in and make it more fitted to your body, if that’s what you desire.
But I thought I’d just take it in 1/4 inch (0.25 inches), and then a tad bit more.
So I deconstructed the waistband sides and skirt sides. Mind you, I had double-topstitched the sides.
And if you know about taking in waistbands the proper way, it’s a bit tedious. You have to open up the waistband, sew the sides, and then close up the band and finish it.
So that’s what I did, only to question myself again. After trying it on, I thought, geee, maybe it was better off the other way.
The skirt was a little bigger at a size 12, but I plan to gain weight. Plus, the fabric has a little stretch to it, and I prefer to wear it on my low waist.
So I slept on this issue. And this is what I should’ve done when questioning myself in the first place.
Sometimes taking the time to walk away and come back really helps. This often gives me clarity.
The next day I realized I didn’t want to take in this skirt. I wondered why I would do all that work and question myself on the size.
So after all that work, I fixed the waistband again. I made it the original size 12. I double topstitched the sides and finished the hem again.
It was annoying, but here’s to good practice.
And here’s to stepping away from a project when you’re overthinking it too much.
Well, the skirt is finally done, and I’m not touching it anymore.
It’s a little too big, but that’s what I want. I’ll grow into it eventually.
And that was my thinking before questioning myself in the first place.
Do you ever waste time and drive yourself insane over indecision? What about perfectionism?
