I made a DIY knit maxi skirt that I absolutely love. It’s so comfy, the fabric feels luxurious, and the red color is beautiful.

With the long front slit and the tie belt, I feel rather dashing in it! It’s such a versatile piece, and I paired it with my striped top for a nautical vibe.

I’ll tell you more about my outfit, materials used, my process, and share photos. You might end up making a similar look.

New Look N6709 Knits Pattern

I picked up New Look N6709 sewing pattern a while ago when a Joann store near me closed. They had a deep sale, and I bought so many things.

This is a Just for Knits pattern to make a skirt or pants. Both have a tie belt and are pull-on.

The skirt has a yoke waist, princess seams, and flares at the bottom.

I like that this pattern is individually sized instead of small, medium, and large. I can fit the skirt better this way.

Knits stretch, so they are more forgiving if you gain a few pounds. The elastic waist can be adjusted if you need to take it in a bit or let it out some.

Materials

Here are all the things I used to make my skirt. Plus, I’ll add a little info about my top too.

Fabric

I got both of my cotton knit fabrics from Joann, and they have elastane.

The deep red fabric pops, and the material feels so buttery soft. The blue striped fabric is soft as well, and more stable than the red one.

Suggested fabrics include jersey, cotton lycra blends, stretch velvet, and ITY (interlock twist yarn).

Notions

I used 1-1/2 inch (1.5-inch) knit elastic for the waist, but the directions will tell you to use 1-1/4 inch (1.25-inch) elastic.

The knit fabric I used was heavier and drapey, so at first I tried the strong stretch elastic, but it wasn’t comfy. I went with the softer elastic, and it held up well and had give.

Needle

I used a size 90/14 ballpoint needle for the skirt and a size 80/12 needle for the top. They are needles made to sew knits, or stretchy fabric.

Thread

For my sewing machine, I used matching Gutermann universal thread made of polyester.

For overlocking, I used Maxi-Lock serger spun thread. It’s made of 100% polyester.

Sewing My Skirt

Although making this skirt was pretty straightforward, the waistband was tricky. I had to follow the directions.

Prepping

Before cutting, I washed the fabrics on delicate. Then I air-dried them to avoid getting pills.

I ironed the fabrics on low heat. Using high heat on elastine will cause it to melt.

The top was easy to cut because the fabric was more stable. The skirt had more stretch in it, so it wanted to cascade off the table.

Construction

I didn’t find this skirt difficult to sew, but it presented some challenges. You’ll definitely need to have skills for sewing knits for this one.

The red fabric has a lot of stretch, and it moved around a lot. I pinned using ballpoint straight pins.

The yoke took up most of my time and effort. I had to stitch the tie belt into the side seam of the yoke.

Because of the yoke, there is no casing for the elastic waist. I had to align the elastic at the top of the fold of the yoke and tack it in place.

The slit required a long straight stitch. And if you’ve worked with knit fabric before, you know this takes extra effort.

My tie belt looks longer than what is pictured, but sketches don’t always show the actual finished product. Oh well, it still looks cool.

Because of the design and fit of this pattern, it has no pockets. Although I prefer skirts with pockets, I am happy without them on this one.

Adjustments

I made my skirt with the slit on the wrong side? I thought I had followed the directions exactly.

Oh well, it’s supposed to be on the other side. But that doesn’t matter! Ha!

Is it just me, or do you mess that up too? I guess don’t pay attention while cutting and notice it later on.

Project Notes

To sew the slit, I had to sew a long straight stitch on knit fabric. The fabric I used wasn’t difficult to sew, but this could be challenging without a walking foot attachment.

If you don’t like the long slit, you can make it shorter. Just decrease the length to what you prefer.

I also think two short slits in the front might look cool, and I might try this next time.

Simplicity S8993 Knits Pattern

I made my top from Simplicity S8993 knit sewing pattern set. You have everything you need to make separates with this one.

It is labeled easy-to-sew and you can make a shirt, cardigan, skirt, and pants. I use this pattern often to make the shirt and pants.

I’ve also used this pattern to make short-sleeve tops by shortening the sleeves. The neckline cuts deep, and I like it.

The skirt is easier to sew than the New Look one. It has pockets and a side slit as well.

Final Thoughts

When I walk in my skirt, it just flows. The drape is amazing, and I love the way it feels against my skin.

Maybe you’ll make one with a flattering front slit too! I can’t wait to make another one.
